When it comes to your beauty routine, pairing products that complement one another can boost your results exponentially. Lipstick looks more polished when paired with lip liner; lash primer gives mascara added oomph; brow pencil plus tinted brow gel maximizes fullness.

If high-impact lashes are your goal, consider adding the dynamic duo of lash serum and eyeliner to your daily regimen. Together, these two products can help your lashes look more dramatic and defined. Here, we’ll delve into what makes lash serum and liner essential on their own and even better when used in tandem. Plus, we’ll help you choose the right formulas for you and learn how to use them for maximum results.

The Rise of Lash Serums

Two decades ago, the lash serum category didn’t even exist within the beauty industry. Today, lash serums are a staple, with countless options to choose from (and some that work better than others).

So how did lash serums become a beauty necessity in such a relatively short period of time? In 2006, ophthalmologist Michael Brinkenhoff, M.D. developed a lash conditioning formula for his wife, Gayle, to help her feel more beautiful during her brave battle with breast cancer. The original serum worked so well that the Brinkenhoffs knew they had to share it with the world…and RevitaLash Cosmetics was born.

Our groundbreaking lash serum became a cult favorite of beauty editors, industry insiders, and celebrities…and copycats soon followed. But no other formula delivered results like ours. Today, we’ve sold over 12 million physician-developed lash serums to date, and RevitaLash® Cosmetics remains the industry’s innovator and expert in lash enhancement.

As the experts, we know a thing or two about what makes a lash serum truly great. Our award-winning RevitaLash® Advanced is powered by our proprietary BioPeptin Complex®—a blend of peptides, biotin, lipids, and green tea extract rich in panthenol that helps condition, strengthen, and soften eyelashes while defending from breakage and brittleness. Our groundbreaking RevitaLash® Advanced Sensitive is the first of its kind: an ophthalmologist-developed lash serum made specifically for those with sensitive eyes. And our RevitaLash® Advanced Pro, exclusively available through professionals, has become the go-to for the aesthetics industry’s top experts.

Level Up Your Lash Look with Eyeliner

While lash serums can deliver lush, dramatic lashes on their own, the results are even better when paired with eyeliner. Liner helps to define your lash line, creating the illusion of darker, thicker eyelashes, and can even help your eyes look larger.

The right eyeliner formula can also help benefit your lash health. For example, our Defining Liner includes conditioning and moisturizing ingredients like vitamin E and silicone emollients, which nourish the skin at the base of your lashes. Its creamy formula glides on effortlessly, without skipping, pulling, or tugging.

Not all eyeliners are as beneficial for your lash line, however. Avoid drying formulas that can leave your eyelids irritated, or waterproof makeup that’s so difficult to remove that it can lead to damaging your delicate lashes.

And what about those hybrid 2-in-1 lash serum-liquid liners that promise to deliver the benefits of both products in a single step? As a physician-led brand, we don’t recommend them. The reason: Lash serums are meant to be applied directly to eyelashes for best results, while eyeliner is typically applied to the skin of the eyelid, along the lash line. Additionally, lash serum should always be applied to clean, dry lashes and allowed to dry before applying makeup. The pigments and waxes in makeup can create a barrier on lashes that makes it more difficult for your lash serum’s ingredients to work their magic. To get the full benefits, keep your lash serum and eyeliner as separate steps in your routine.

How to Use Lash Serum and Liner Together

To maximize the benefits of your lash serum and liner, it’s important to use them in the correct order. Always apply lash serum to clean, dry lashes—never over makeup.

Our RevitaLash® Advanced serums are designed to be applied once a day, morning or night. If you prefer to apply your lash serum in the morning, use it after washing and towel drying your face. Let the serum dry completely before applying eyeliner.

If you prefer to use your lash serum in the evening, remove your makeup first. Use a micellar water makeup remover, such as our Micellar Water Lash Wash, to cleanse your eye area and remove traces of eyeliner and other products. Micellar waters are great because they don’t leave behind a residue. Oil-based makeup removers often leave a greasy film that can interfere with the application of your lash serum. Once your lashes are clean and dry, apply your serum directly to your eyelashes, above the lash line.

Choosing the Right Products

Let the ingredient list be your guide when shopping for lash serums and eyeliners. Choose formulas with conditioning ingredients like vitamin E, amino acids, and B vitamins to keep your lashes and lids soft and supple. Ingredients like peptides and biotin can help strengthen and soften eyelashes.

Look for oil-free formulas, especially if you have lash extensions, since oil can break down the adhesive. Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic formulas are a must for the delicate eye area, and any products you choose should be ophthalmologist- and/or dermatologist-reviewed. You might also want to avoid ingredients like parabens and phthalates, which have raised concerns among some beauty consumers in recent years.

How to Apply for Maximum Impact

Ready to achieve your most stunning lashes yet? Follow these simple steps to create an eye-catching look:

  • Step 1: Cleanse your eye area with an oil-free micellar water to remove makeup and residue. (Oil-based makeup removers and cleansers can leave behind a film which may create a barrier between your lashes and the lash conditioner.)
  • Step 2: Apply a thin line of RevitaLash® Advanced directly to clean, dry eyelashes above the lash line. Let dry completely.
  • Step 3: Apply Defining Liner along the top and bottom lash line.
  • Step 4: Smudge liner to soften and blend.

Liner & Lash Serum: Your New Favorite Duo

Once you see how stunning your eyes can look with regular use of a lash serum and eyeliner, you’ll be hooked. And with the right formulas, your lashes will reap the benefits to become strong, flexible, and healthy.
