4 Habits That Are Drying Out Your Lashes & Brows

Just like the hair on your head, lashes and brows can become dry and brittle — but that doesn’t mean you have to live with it. Once you understand the root cause of dry, damaged lashes and brows, you can take the right steps to bring them back to their lush, healthy, and hydrated glory. Ahead, we examine a few of the most common habits that cause lashes and brows to lose their luster.

CURLING YOUR LASHES TOO FORCEFULLY

The perfect curl can give your entire look a lift, but crimping your lashes with a subpar tool or using too much pressure when doing so can be disastrous to their health. The reason? Excess friction can damage the hairs’ outer protective cuticle, compromising their ability to hold onto moisture. Always curl lashes gently, and use a curler that won’t cause breakage (our Signature Eyelash Curler is a great option).

WEARING HEAVY MAKEUP DAILY

If you’ve ever spent a full day sporting long-wear lipstick, you know many makeup formulas can be drying. Certain mascaras and brow products, waterproof formulations in particular, can leave lashes and brows positively parched (and so can the harsh makeup removers required to take them off). The solution? Choose cosmetics with conditioning benefits built in (we happen to know of some excellent options), and save waterproof mascara for special occasions.

RUBBING YOUR EYES

If a renewed awareness of germs hasn’t broken you of this habit, realizing its effect on your lashes and brows just might. Similar to the way that improper lash curling can cause damage, the friction from rubbing your eyes can leave lash and brow hairs compromised, allowing them to become dry and brittle — and can cause hairs to fall out as well. Your best bet is a hands-off policy from here on out.

IMPROPERLY CARING FOR LASHES AND BROWS AFTER TREATMENTS

While you may love the look of lash lifts and brow laminations, at-home aftercare is essential to enhancing their effects. Think about it: Your hairstylist probably recommends you use a mask for at-home upkeep if you color or perm your hair. Your lashes and brows deserve the same TLC.

Our new Lash & Brow Masque was created with this idea in mind, and can be used starting 24 hours after a lash lift or brow lamination. Its revolutionary tubing technology envelops each hair with an immediate infusion of nourishing ingredients. The result? Lashes and brows that feel more hydrated with just one use, and look healthier, stronger, shinier and more flexible with continued twice-a-week application. Now that’s a habit we can get behind.
